When Rick’s singer-songwriter wife Sky is discovered at an L.A. club, his excitement rapidly turns to dread as fame finds her seemingly overnight. Sky embarks on a multicity tour, while Rick, a middle school teacher, spends his nights alone at home, eating microwavable meals and waiting for his wife to call between rehearsals. Sky gradually morphs into someone he doesn’t recognize, someone who might not need him anymore, and Rick tries everything to keep his marriage intact. But through the wild nights partying with Sky on tour, a threesome, and even parenthood, Rick grows ever more certain that Sky will never again be the same girl he met in college. He’s left with a choice: ride the rollercoaster of celebrity with her, or go his own way.

What others are saying about Skies:

“Michael Royston has written an engaging and arousing novel about celebrity in the increasingly dehumanizing era of our new millennium. You’ll root for Rick and Sky all the way up until the horrifying end.”

  • Adam Robinson, Visiting Writer, Savannah College of Art and Design

“What I love most about Skies—beyond the premise, which is rich, meaty material in itself—is that there are no saints among these characters. They’re all a mess, and they make messy, and often self-destructive decisions that are as engaging to experience as they are devastating.”

  • Lindsey Alexander, former HarperCollins editor

“In this story, Royston constructs a well-drawn portrait of intimacy, lust, tenderness, and the powerful ever-present hand of interpersonal blindness. But it is also a story about rock and roll. And about Los Angeles. And about the reckless exuberance of youth and the necessary recalibration that arrives with age. My final takeaway after finishing Skies: when sharply observed every love story reveals itself as both beautiful and tragic.”
